Overview

This course on DITA provides a comprehensive understanding of DITA. It is a 12-week online course that covers all aspects of DITA including topics, maps, linking, content reuse, specialization and processing.

MODULE 1


Introduction to DITA

On successful completion of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Understand what DITA does
  • Discuss the benefits of DITA in content creation, management and publishing.
  • Recognize the business advantages of DITA

MODULE 2


DITA Topics

On successful completion of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the basic DITA elements used to create concept, task and reference topics
  • Understand the basic block and phrase elements used to add to a DITA topic
  • Add related links to topics
  • Add product information and keyword metadata to topic <prolog> containers

MODULE 3


DITA maps & linking

On successful completion of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the standard XML markup included in a DITA map
  • Discuss the format, scope, type and linking attributes and values that can be used in a DITA map
  • Know how the processing attributes can be used to create custom deliverables from DITA maps
  • Describe how linking works and control how links are displayed
  • Comprehend how relationship tables define links among topics in a DITA map

Content Reuse

On successful completion of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the benefits of DITA content reuse
  • Know how to reuse elements by using content references
  • Understand the conref and conkeyref attributes in a DITA topic and map

Specialization

Processing

  • Install and test the DITA open tool kit and related applications
  • Create and modify build files for output
  • Add Cascading Style Sheets, headers and footers
  • Understand filtering and flagging
  • Know the role of metadata attributes in conditional processing
  • How to set up topics to be filtered correctly during conditional processing
  • How to create files for output using conditional processing
